The TIE Application: Your Physical Key to Living in Valencia

For non-EU citizens moving to Spain, the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the most important document you will own. It is your physical residency card, your proof of legal status, and your ticket to traveling freely within the Schengen Area.

While your visa (the sticker in your passport) gets you into the country, the TIE is what allows you to stay. At TN Lawyers, we guide expats through the “Fingerprinting” (Huellas) process in Valencia, ensuring you navigate the police appointments and paperwork with 100% accuracy.

What is the TIE?

The TIE is a biometric plastic card that includes:

  • Your photo and fingerprints.

  • Your permanent NIE (Foreigner Identity Number).

  • The type of residency you hold (Digital Nomad, Student, Non-Lucrative, etc.).

  • The card’s expiration date.

Crucial Deadline: By law, you must apply for your TIE within 30 days of your arrival in Spain (or the date your residency is approved if applying from within the country). Missing this window can complicate your legal status.

How TN Lawyers Supports Your TIE Process

The process in Valencia is divided into several administrative steps. We manage the “hidden” hurdles that often trip up new arrivals.

1. The Appointment (Cita Previa)

The Valencia police stations (located at Calle Bailén or Patraix) are among the busiest in Spain. Securing an appointment for “Toma de Huellas” (Fingerprinting) can be nearly impossible without a dedicated team. We monitor the system 24/7 to secure your slot as soon as possible.

2. Document Preparation & Audit

We prepare your physical “Expediente” for the police officer. This includes:

  • The EX-17 Application Form, correctly filled out.

  • Your approval resolution (Resolución de Concesión).

  • Passport and visa copies.

  • Three recent “carnet” style photographs (meeting exact Spanish specifications).

  • Proof of the Model 790-012 tax payment (we generate the form and ensure the correct fee is paid).

3. The “Padrón” Coordination

You cannot get a TIE without a Certificado de Empadronamiento (Town Hall registration). We synchronize your TIE appointment with your move-in date and your Padrón registration to ensure your card displays your correct, current address in Valencia.

4. Day-of-Appointment Guidance

The police appointment is a formal procedure conducted in Spanish. We provide you with a “Day-of-Cheat-Sheet” and, if required, professional accompaniment to ensure that the fingerprinting process goes smoothly and that the officer accepts all your documentation without issue.

5. Card Collection Management

Approximately 30–45 days after your fingerprinting, your card will be ready. We track the collection process, assist you in booking the “Recogida de Tarjeta” appointment, and ensure you have the necessary receipt (Resguardo) to pick up your new TIE.

Tip for 2026: Remember that your TIE is your official ID within Spain. You should always carry it with you, especially when traveling within the EU, as it serves as your re-entry permit into the country.
