Embarking on an Educational Journey in Spain

Spain is one of the world’s most attractive destinations for international students. If you are a non-EU national and wish to study in Spain, the Student Visa is the first essential step to begin your educational, cultural, and personal experience in the country.

The Spanish Student Visa is a residence authorization that allows non-EU citizens to live in Spain for the duration of their studies. It applies to:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate university programs
  • Master’s and PhD studies
  • Vocational and professional training
  • Accredited academic, artistic, or cultural programs

Recent immigration reforms make the Student Visa even more appealing, allowing students to work part-time (up to 30 hours per week) during their studies.

Although the Student Visa does not count toward permanent residency or nationality, it offers a unique opportunity to study, work part-time and enjoy life in Spain.

types

Spain offers two main options, depending on the duration of your studies:

Short-Term Student Visa

Ideal for programs lasting between 91 and 180 days. It is used for summer courses, intensives and short academic programs. This visa cannot be renewed, so if your studies continue beyond this period, you must apply for a long-term visa.

Long-Term Student Visa

Required for courses longer than six months, including university degrees, master’s programs or vocational training. The initial validity is typically one year, and it can be renewed annually as long as you remain enrolled and continue meeting the requirements. Students holding this visa must also obtain their TIE residence card after arriving in Spain.

After Your Studies

You may be eligible to switch to:

A Work Permit

A Residence for Job Search (depending on current immigration law)

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a non-EU citizen
  • Be admitted to a recognized educational institution in Spain
  • Show sufficient financial means (at least 100% of the IPREM per month — approx. €600–€720)
  • Hold valid health insurance in Spain
  • Provide a clean criminal record certificate (for stays over 6 months)
  • Present a medical certificate confirming no diseases of public health concern
  • Show valid accommodation details

Supporting documents (passport, photos, academic records, etc.) are also required.
